Based on the
adored stories of Dr. Seuss,
Seussical the Musical
features Horton the Elephant who discovers a tiny planet
on a small speck of dust in the jungle of Nool. On the
tiny planet exists a tiny population of people known as
Whos. Sadly for Horton, no one else in the jungle
believes there are people on that Speck of Dust, but in
the face of persecution he champions their cause
throughout the endearing musical and gains their
survival in the end.
As the
beloved Cat in the Hat and the three Bird Girls weave
the story into a believable Seuss tale, memorable
characters pop in and out of scenes: the Mayor and his
wife, JoJo their son, Gertrude McFuzz—the bird with the
one-feathered tail, Layzie Mayzie La Bird, the Sour
Kangaroo, General Genghis Kahn Schmitz and his Cadets,
Yertle the Turtle, the Wickersham Brothers who “Monkey
Around” and the Citizens of the Jungle of Nool.
Exciting
up-beat music by Ragtime composer Steven Flaherty
alternates with beautiful musical moments such as the
duet between Horton and JoJo, “Alone in the Universe”,
and the favorite lullaby, “Solla Sollew”. Lyrics by Lynn
Ahrens keep the audience entertained throughout the
two-hour show by the HEARTS cast and live orchestra.
Hawaii
Education of the ARTS
is a Windward-based 501(c)3 non-profit arts education
organization. Seussical the Musical is HEARTS 6th annual
musical theatre production.
